Seven Ways to Please God

Every good gift we have has come from God, and He wants to give us “pleasure forevermore.” In gratitude for all He does for us, what can you and I do to please Him?

Finding a gift that will please God can seem challenging! Thankfully the Bible tells us not only what God hates (such as in Proverbs 6:16-19) but what He delights in as well. You and I will be most fulfilled when we fulfill God’s purpose for our lives because He loves us and wants the best for us.

1. HAVE FAITH IN GOD:
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

This Scripture identifies faith, belief in God and believing He will do what He says He will do as a prerequisite for pleasing God. It also gives an example of this kind of faith:
Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enouch was taken away so that He did not see death, and was not found, because God had taken him for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

2. BE SPIRITUALLY MINDED:
Romans 8:6-8
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

The Bible contrasts two mind set: The normal, human one (the fleshly, carnal mind) and the one led by the Spirit of God (the spiritual mind verse Romans 8: 9). Having the Holy Spirit dwelling in us and leading us is another prerequisite for pleasing God.

In Acts 2:38, the apostle Peter summarized the process God has set for us to follow to receive His Spirit. “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

3. FEAR GOD:
Psalm 147:11
The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.
It’s not that God delights in having us terrified of Him. Psalm 147 described God as the One who “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (verse 3). The Scripture praises His mercy, His knowledge (He knows the names of all the stars) and His power to save the humble (verse 4-6). The Bible tells us to fear God, not because it is good for Him, but because it is good for us to accurately recognize that He is more powerful than anything else.

The proper fear and respect of God will motivate us to avoid sin (Exodus 20:20) It reminds us that God will hold us accountable for our actions.

4. STUDY AND FOLLOW JESUS CHRIST’S EXAMPLE:
Matthew 17:5
While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

During a vision of the future Kingdom of God known as the transfiguration, God impressed on Peter, James and John the preeminence of Jesus Christ. Jesus truly was the Son of God, and there is no one who has pleased God more. You and I should all hear Him and follow His example.

5. OBEY GOD:
1 Samuel 15:22
22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

God doesn’t command us to obey just because it is good for Him, but because it is good for us (Deuteronomy 10:13) His laws and commands are beneficial; and as a result of obeying Him, we grow in godly, righteous character. We become more like Him.

6. DO GOD’S WILL:
Hebrews 13:20-21
20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

God’s will for us goes beyond just knowing what He wants. It involves doing “every good work” working at maturing spiritually and becoming more like God (Matthew 5:48).

7. GIVE THE SACRIFICE GOD WANTS:
Hebrews 13:15-16
15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Mark 12:30-31
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

If you are reading this and do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, I would like to extend this invitation to you to receive the gift of salvation today. You can do so by praying and truly believing the prayer below, or by praying to God in your own Words.

PRAYER:
God,
I confess that I have sinned against You, and I know that there is nothing I can do by my own efforts to change my condition. I believe that Jesus Christ shed His blood and died on the cross for my sins; And that He rose from the grave on the Third Day to grant me eternal life. I know You love me, God, and I love You. I place my faith and trust only in You to conform my heart to Your will; And to order my steps everyday, from this day forward. Thank You , Lord, for saving me.

When we accept salvation, God saves us immediately, and makes us fit for entrance into Heaven, however some changes God will empower you to make easily, while making other changes will be a process that may take months or even years to make. Regardless of your situation, I assure you that the Lord loves you more than you could ever comprehend, and He will be with you every step of the way. Pray, study God’s Word and ask Him to give you revelation of what you are reading. I also pray that the Lord will direct you to a true Bible teaching, Jesus loving church, where you can have the support of other believers.

  2. I’ve known and believed in these things since my childhood, but surprisingly I still find myself guilty of sin. How can the Holy Spirit always live with me? Whatelse can I do to live a clean and better life than before apart from just accepting Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and savior?

    1. hi, Emmanuel, Thank You for commenting. I believe that at some point all believers have the same concern that you shared above.

      If you have asked Jesus Christ to be your Lord and savior, then you have taken the most important step to pleasing God. Sin is a horrible monster that can only be overcome when a person gets saved and has the Holy Spirit dwelling within them.

      Pray daily and ask the Lord to reveal to you the things that you are doing that displease Him; And ask the Holy Spirit to help you with humility to let go of these sinful ways. This may even include getting a Christian accountability partner, that you trust and whom truly wants to see you grow in your faith, to call you out when they see you going down the wrong road.

      Usually there are two factors that contribute to us continuing to willfully sin.
      1). The shame of attempting to hide sinful deeds from God and the people who truly love us.
      2). The pride of attempting to justify continuing to do sinful things, that we know God is displeased with.

      When we get saved, we are fit for Heaven, however God knows that there are sinful ways that His Spirit will need to work with us on dealing with. God loves us, and will forgive us if we acknowledge our wrong doings and ask Him to strengthen us.

  3. Peaceful people will please God. The church taught people to not be peaceful to nude people, and people who are intimate with another species, called zoophilia people. People are taught to be mean to people who have images of God’s young nude form. They are called pedophiles. They are treated badly. God is not pleased with people who are violent, speaking bitter words. Deceptive people will not please God.

      Christians must hold each other accountable for living by Godly standards, and also warn the unsaved of the consequences of continuing to live in sin. Some believers may take a sterner approach when speaking against sin, but a sincere Christian doesn’t want the devil to deceive anyone into going to Hell.

      Jonathan, in your comments above, you mentioned several things that the Bible calls sexually immoral, such as zoophilia. I am unsure if you are speaking of yourself or someone else you may be acquainted with.

      I must let you know that God makes it very clear in the Bible that in regards to human relations, sex should ONLY be taking place between a man and a woman within marriage. Sex with animals, sex with children, looking at porn is sin along with other deeds that do displease God.

      The Old Testament scripture, Leviticus 20:15-16, speaks very strongly of God’s displeasure with people having intercourse with animals. Of course, in today’s time, a Christian would not kill an individual who partakes in zoophilia, but would instead share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them.

      Other Scriptures on sexual immorality:
      1 Corinthians 6:9
      9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
      10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

      The Good News is that: Jesus Christ died to free people from their sins, including people who were: having sex with animals, who messed around with children, and looking at porn. A person must first want to be delivered from doing these sinful deeds, and then they must ask Jesus Christ to be their Savior and to help them to stop doing these sinful things. That person then needs the good loving support and accountability of a Godly church family.

      1 John 1:5-9
      5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
      6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
      7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
      8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
      9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I really don’t understand why I can’t keep my promise to God ,I promised I will not go back to my sinful ways and I still find myself doing those things, even I don’t feel the presence of the holy spirit in me anymore my prayers are becoming weak. I do have the gift of vision before but because of my sin I get visions and I don’t even know how to interpret. I really need serious help

    1. Hi, Favour. Thank You for commenting. I would like to commend you for having the courage to admit that you are struggling with some sins.

      There are so many people in this world who try to cover up or even justify their sinful ways, but you are willing to admit that there are some strongholds in your life. Favour, you are very brave and you are demonstrating great humility.

      As you may be aware the Apostle Paul wrote a great majority of the New Testament, and was chosen by God to first introduce the Gospel to the Gentiles. Yet, if you take a look at Romans 7:15-25, we see that there was a point in his life where Paul was expressing the same dilemma you have mentioned. If you truly desire to be free of this stronghold, I know Jesus has the power to help you get free, so that you can be a mighty ambassador for Him and live out a victorious life.

      Favour, would you feel comfortable responding here in these comments, with the particular sin(s) that you are having struggles getting free of? It is Okay, if you don’t want to publicly share what the specific sin(s) are. I just need to hear back from you, so that I can pray and detrmine the best determine the best guidance to provide you with that will help you overcome things that are holding you back from living out a fulfilled Christian life.

  5. I was browsing I was looking up a word rewarded and found this page I felt to sleep and the page was still there . I began to read comments. I to is struggling with some many issues I have made promises after promises to God and lot of sins that I committed . But still doing what is wrong with me?

      Sin is certainly a thorn in the side of all people who desire to live a life that honors God. It is a good thing that you are willing to acknowledge that there is sin in your life that is causing issues.
