Body, Soul, and Spirit

Genesis 1:27, tells us that God created mankind in His image. Many people take this as meaning physical appearance, however this goes much deeper.

God has created men and women in His image. Genesis 1:27

God manifests Himself in three parts.

• God the Father – Creator of all things, and the preserver of light and life
• Jesus Christ – God’s only begotten Son, Israel’s prophesied Messiah, The Word of God made flesh
• The Holy Spirit – Convicts and converts sinners to lead them to salvation, dwells within the spirit of all “Born Again” Christians to empower them to resist sin &serve God

I John 5:6-7 KJV
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Men and women are comprised of three parts:

• BODY: referred to as our flesh, physical home, our five senses that communicate with the soul
• SOUL: Our Personality (mind, emotions, conscious, and imagination)
• SPIRIT: Can only be accessed via the Word of God. It is the dwelling place of God within all born again Christians.

I Thessalonians 5:23 KJV
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Now let’s take a closer look at each part.

THE BODY
So our body is the house/temple where our soul and spirit reside. Our five senses of sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch are the gateways to our soul.

THE SOUL:
Our soul is basically our personality(emotions, conscious, mind, FREE WILL, and imagination This is the part of us that needs salvation.)

Adam and Eve were created to only know good, however when Adam used his free will and chose to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, their body and soul became capable of evil/sin. Furthermore, because every human being is a descendant of Adam, we have inherited the sin nature.

Genesis 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
No matter how hard we try on our own, all of us commit sin, via our flesh(body&soul interaction) and fall short of God’s standards, and justice would demand eternal separation from the Creator who loves us.
Fortunately, God sent His only begotten son to not only redeem us from the penalty of an eternity in hell, but to also empower us to overcome the sin nature within each of us, and to assist other men and women in doing the same.

THE SPIRIT:
Our spirit is the third part of the human trinity, and is the connection by which born again Christians can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Our spirit cannot be influenced by our flesh(body&soul), however it CAN influence them.
It is God’s Holy Spirit that convicts and begins to convert the soul of sinners, via our spirit.
Once a person chooses to accept Jesus as their Saviour, the Holy Spirit comes to live within the spirit of that individual.
When we used the word “born again”, it refers to our spirit being born into the kingdom of God, and us inheriting all of the benefits of being a child of the King of Kings.
A saved person’s spirit is perfect in every way, however in order for the spirit to overcome the sin that still exists in body&soul, it must be fed/strengthened by the Word of God(studying the Bible, listening to a sermon, listening to inspiring music, interacting with other believers)
It is the Holy Spirit who gives born again Christians understanding, revelation, and wisdom of the scriptures we read. God’s Holy Spirit also advises believers on how to interact with other saved and unsaved people, and helps us produce the fruits of the spirit, outlined in Galations 5:22-23.
John 16:13-15
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Ephesians 1:13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Ephesians 1:17-20
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

THE SPIRIT VS THE FLESH:
Paul references the struggle that goes on within all believers, when he comments that he sometimes finds himself neglecting to do the things he knows he should be doing, and doing the things which he knows are sinful. He goes on to say that this happens because though he is born again, the sin nature that still exists within his flesh wars against his spirit. Romans 7:11-25
So since we know that the sin nature lives within our flesh(Body&Soul) and that The Holy Spirit dwells in the spirit of a born again Christian; The question is how do we ensure that our spirit wins control of our life and destiny?
The answer is whichever one you feed/invest the most in will be the strongest.
For example
If we are spending the majority of our free time watching television programs, listening to music, or hanging out with people who promote profanity, sexual immorality, and/or hatred towards a particular group of people, our five senses will feed this info into our personality, and we will find ourselves devising ways to carry out these sinful acts.
On the other hand, if we are setting aside quality time to study the Word of God, seeking God’s revelation through prayer, and hanging with people who promote good Christian values, when we encounter temptations, persecution, or any of life’s other challenges, God’s Holy Spirit will bring back to our remembrance an encouraging scripture that we’ve read or something encouraging that a true friend has spoken to us.
The key to victory is to be a sincere born again Christian, feed the spirit, the spirit will then begin to gradually transform the soul. With the spirit and soul working together, the body will obey.
We are all a work in progress, but remember; the more you feed the spirit the stronger you will be.
Galations 5:16-18
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Galations 6:7-8
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
