Ruth 1:16-17 But Ruth said: Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; for wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.
(17) Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.
In this beautiful emotionally charged poetic response, Ruth described her determination to remain with Naomi. Her assertion that Naomi’s God would be her God is striking.
Friends, this is an affirmation of faith in the Lord, the God of Israel.
Do we have such an affirmation of faith in the Lord today? Yes or No
Ruth was choosing to cling not only to Naomi, her land, and her people, but also to her God. Ruth was forsaking all that she had ever known to follow the one true God. She was following in the footsteps of Abraham, who had forsaken his family and his homeland in response to God’s command in Genesis 12:1,4.
Naomi and her family had gone to ungodly Moab during a time of famine. Naomi’s sons had married Moabite wives. Naomi’s husband died, and then her sons also died, leaving three widows. Naomi then told her daughters-in-law to return to their families of origin, Orpah did, but Ruth pledged her life not just to Naomi but to her God.
What would happen in today’s culture? Return or Stay
Do we understand the importance of our testimonies on our families today?
Naomi’s family influenced Ruth to the extent that she left all to follow Naomi and more importantly, Naomi’s God. The young widow Ruth would become the great-great grandmother of David, and is listed in the genealogy of Jesus.
Heavenly Father, we pray for our families and our influence on them. May they see Jesus in our lives.
If you are reading this and do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, I would like to extend this invitation to you to receive the gift of salvation today. You can do so by praying and truly believing the prayer below, or by praying to God in your own Words.
I confess that I have sinned against You, and I know that there is nothing I can do by my own efforts to change my condition. I believe that Jesus Christ shed His blood and died on the cross for my sins; And that He rose from the grave on the Third Day to grant me eternal life. I know You love me, God, and I love You. I place my faith and trust only in You to conform my heart to Your will; And to order my steps everyday, from this day forward. Thank You , Lord, for saving me.
When we accept salvation, God saves us immediately, and makes us fit for entrance into Heaven, however some changes God will empower you to make easily, while making other changes will be a process that may take months or even years to make. Regardless of your situation, I assure you that the Lord loves you more than you could ever comprehend, and He will be with you every step of the way. Pray, study God’s Word and ask Him to give you revelation of what you are reading. I also pray that the Lord will direct you to a true Bible teaching, Jesus loving church, where you can have the support of other believers.
