How to Pray Prayers of Intercession

Intercession one of the most powerful, yet least practiced.

Intercession is the type of prayer that is focused on the needs of others. An excellent description of intercession is found in Ezekiel.

Ezekiel 22:30
And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

In this verse of Scripture, the intercessor “stands between” God and those who deserve judgement. The prayers of intercessors are God’s foundational strategy for evangelism, missions, discipleship, revival, and spiritual awakening.

Most denominations and churches today put great emphasis on programs, promotions, and strategies; while skimping on prayer. I believe the lack of power in many ministries is explained by very shallow levels of intercession.

When considering subjects for intercession, remember one of the foundational principles. Let your greatest focus be issues with eternal rather than temporal significance.

1. Spiritual and physical needs of family and friends.
2. Spiritual needs of coworkers, classmates, and those we see in daily life (waitresses, sales clerks, doctors, etc.)
3. Those who don’t know Christ.
4. Spiritual growth and protection for new Christians.
5. Backslidden believers
6. Your pastor, staff and key lay leaders.
7. Revival and growth in your church.
8. Missionaries and persecuted believers.
9. Key denominational leaders and agencies (local, state, and denominational)
10. Spiritual leaders and key churches of all denominations.
11. National leaders (the president, governors, mayors, etc)
12. Local, state, and national government.
13. Sweeping revival and spiritual awakening (local, national, and worldwide).
14. Mission initiatives
15. Evangelism initiatives.

For the lost and backslidden.
Lord, pour out Your Spirit upon (name of person) and:
a. Convict him /her of his/her sin and separation from You. John 16:8
b. Reveal to him/her who You are and what Christ has done for him/her.
c. Open the eyes of his/her understanding. Ephesians 1:18.
d. Remove the spiritual blindness. 2 Corinthians 4:4.

Biblical passages that can be used as prayers for pastors and leaders are Colossians 1:9-11; Philippians 1:9-11.

1. Specific prayers for your church.
2. Specific prayers for revival and spiritual awakening
3. Specific prayers for local or national elections. (godly men and women).

Friends, do not be overwhelmed by the potential depth of intercession. God will get you there one step at a time and at your own pace.

God has called all His children to some level of consistent intercession.

  1. Dear OTT, Thanks for your article. I believe in fasting as a normal part of being in a relationship with the great King of Kings. Currently, I am fasting for wisdom for personal questions, and the peace of the election cycle ending November 3, 2020 in my home state of Minnesota and in the United States. If you are led, please consider lifting us up in your prayers. I don’t yet fully understand why, but for some reason this is a place in the throes of a massive spiritual battle. The wrongful death of George Floyd and destructive aftermath is just the tip of the iceberg. We need to address the spiritual root judgments and separations with our Father that are spilling over and manifesting as acts of cultural revolution, and political and spiritual judgments and separations. Please consider that the Lord will embolden the faith of the Church here, and cause us to stand for His Kingdom in humility. As believers, we get to be the “glue” of society because we have tasted the Lord’s favor and forgiveness to all people, at all times; everywhere. 1. Yes, I too have been praying without ceasing regarding these topics that you mentioned.

The Word of God warned us that we’d see these troubling times, but God has promised to deliver all who call upon the name of Jesus for salvation. We will continue to pray that souls will be saved.
