Check Those Attachments

Last Fall, I had an opportunity to mentor a young man, whom we will call Jordan for confidentiality purposes.

After completing four years of college, Jordan had recently reconnected with a young woman, from his high school years, and they’d been dating for five months. Jordan’s parents were very concerned about how fast the relationship was progressing, because Jordan had been spending a lot of money on his girlfriend, the girl was calling him six to seven times a day, and Jordan had started talking about possibly moving in with her. His parents could see Jordan’s prayer life beginning to diminish, and he’d started missing church services. Jordan would get defensive with his parents whenever they’d attempt to discuss their concerns with him, and so they reached out to me, in hopes that I could talk with him.

As we talked, I discovered that Jordan had been teased a lot about him being overweight and him having large ears, as a teenager. This had damaged his self-esteem, and caused him to be extremely shy about talking to girls, which caused many of his unsaved peers to question his sexual preference, at times.

While he’d slimmed down the poundage since high school, it was very obvious that Jordan was still dealing with some self-esteem issues…as he talked about his girlfriend a little more, it became apparent that she was also dealing with some self-esteem issues also.

With God’s leading I helped Jordan gain an awareness that he had some negative attachments in his life. He was attached to the belief that he had to have a girlfriend in order to be validated as a man, because of the ridicule during his teen years, He was attached to doing anything this girl wanted him to do even if it was contrary to the Biblical principles he was raised with, and he was attached to the belief that while he knew his parents loved him – he believed that they were manipulating the Word to keep him from demonstrating his independence.

It took several conversations and much prayer, but to God be all the glory, Jordan was freed of those above negative attachments; He gained a realization of his true validation in God’s eyes, he parted ways with that young lady with them both agreeing to just be friends, He reconciled with his parents, He recommitted to a strong prayer life and study of God’s Word, and He got back into serving in church activities. With God’s guidance and favor, Jordan is currently excelling on his job and growing spiritually…He will be prepared when God does place the right female in his path.

So I ask you, reader, what types of negative/harmful attachments do you have? Are you attached to always having to be right? Are you attached to being self-sufficient? Are you attached to the pain and anguish of a hateful word that was said to you or a heinous act that was done to you or someone you care about? As you watch the news of today’s turmoil in the world, do you find yourself getting attached to the propaganda the media is presenting?

A few months ago, another Christian Blogger and I witnessed to an Atheist, who said all sorts of blasphemous things against God. We ultimately discovered that the woman was carrying hatred in her heart, because, during the lady’s childhood, her parents had been mistreated via some ungodly politics at their church.

As you can see from Jordan and the Atheist lady’s stories, these negative attachments start fueling all of our actions. They will hinder the believer from serving God fully; And they will blind the unbeliever from coming to a saving faith in Jesus Christ. So, it is imperative that each of us gains an awareness of these harmful attachments, and get unplugged from them.

I’m a comic book fan, so think of it like this. Superman can do all of these amazing things, however whenever he is around green kryptonite it can kill him. These negative attachments are our kryptonite. They will kill our marriages, kill our careers, kill our relationship with our kids, and if a person is not saved these negative attachments will kill their chance to spend an eternity in the presence of a loving God. We have to get free of negative attachments.

The issue is that our own sin nature, the influences of this fallen world, and the devil will prevent us from unplugging by our own efforts, BUT there is a solution. There is a Loving, Holy attachment that empowers us with the strength to unplug from anything negative that we have an awareness of.

Jesus said…
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. (John 15:5

God was in perfect fellowship with Adam and eve, until they sinned by eating the forbidden fruit. When this occurred, sin entered the world, and a detachment occurred between God and mankind. Jesus Christ came to provide the means to restore the connection.

Prior to a person receiving salvation, there is a void in each of us. We try to fill this void with so many various things, and these things become negative attachments eventually. It is only when the Lord Jesus Christ comes to live within our heart, via the Holy Spirit, that this void is truly filled.

There is no weakness on the Lord’s end, but we have to strengthen things on our end by being intentional about communicating with God in prayer, Studying the Word of God to learn more of God’s character, and gathering with other believers so that we will have encouragement and accountability when needed.

It is imperative that we do the above three things, because just like in Jordan’s situation, the evil one will send those negative attachments our way to hinder our walk with the Lord and damage our testimony So, we need to always be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, because He will alert us when a negative attachment is initiated. Due to the fact that we don’t always take heed to the Spirit’s voice for various reasons at times, I would also reiterate the value of having a trusted saved Accountability Partner(s) to come to you in Godly love, when they see you succumbing to the influences of a negative attachment.
Our society glorifies material things like houses, cars, money, and attractive physiques; And sadly many preachers are also promoting these things through the prosperity Gospel, where they attach an individual’s procurement of material things to that person dropping large financial blessings into said preacher’s ministry…THIS IS WRONG; And only serves to create a negative attachment that turns people away from the faith when they do not get their material thing after “sowing a seed” into said ministry.

I am not saying that God will not bless you with nice things that you enjoy, but true blessings come as we mature in our Walk, and understand what is truly important to God. It is not God’s desire that any person would die in their sins, and spend an eternity separated from Him, in a lake of fire and brimstone. God’s top priority and desire is to save lost men and women from sin, so that they can live an abundant life that glorifies Him and then spend eternity in His loving presence…As we pray and interact with other people, our desire must be that the power and love of Christ would shine through our life in such a way that the unsaved would want to receive that same power and love.

Jesus makes this promise to all who place their trust in Him:

John 15:7-11

7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

For the “born again” God knows that we will mess up sometimes, so when the Holy Spirit reveals to us directly that we’ve got some negative attachments, or if He uses another believer to speak to us…We can go to God and apologize, just like David did when he sinned.(Psalm 51) Also, never forget that Jesus is sitting at the right hand of the Father, interceding on our behalf.(Romans 8:34)

Satan will use every scheme he can to get us attached to things that will be detrimental to our future, but the power and love of Jesus Christ has already triumphed over the evil one. Jesus is interceding for us, and the Holy Spirit lives within every believer. When the Lord helps us to break free of negative attachments, and strengthens us…we should do as Jesus instructed Peter, We should help someone else get free.

Luke 22:31-32
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

If you are reading this and do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, I would like to extend this invitation to you to receive the gift of salvation today. You can do so by praying and truly believing the prayer below, or by praying to God in your own Words.

I confess that I have sinned against You, and I know that there is nothing I can do by my own efforts to change my condition. I believe that Jesus Christ shed His blood and died on the cross for my sins; And that He rose from the grave on the Third Day to grant me eternal life. I know You love me, God, and I love You. I place my faith and trust only in You to conform my heart to Your will; And to order my steps everyday, from this day forward. Thank You , Lord, for saving me.

When we accept salvation, God saves us immediately, and makes us fit for entrance into Heaven, however some changes God will empower you to make easily, while making other changes will be a process that may take months or even years to make. Regardless of your situation, I assure you that the Lord loves you more than you could ever comprehend, and He will be with you every step of the way. Pray, study God’s Word and ask Him to give you revelation of what you are reading. I also pray that the Lord will direct you to a true Bible teaching, Jesus loving church, where you can have the support of other believers.

  1. The young man and atheist women were blessed to have you share God’s wisdom with them. This post was also a great indictment to examine the attachments we have in our lives, and cut off the ones not pleasing to Christ. Great post continue allowing the Lord to use you!
