While listening in on a recent conference call with some friends, I had an opportunity to hear the following testimony from one of my friends’ fiancée, Karen, who works at a pharmaceutical company in our town.
Karen explained that when she started with the company, five years ago, she immediately struck up a friendship with Christy, who’d started a year earlier. Karen grew up in a single parent Christian home, where her mother took her to church each Sunday, and her church body was very active in the community. Christy, on the other hand, came from a very prominent family in town, and her parents had raised her as an Atheist.
Karen explained that while their backgrounds were very different, they both shared a mutual love for “The Young & The Restless”, UNC College Basketball, and Mexican food. In fact, it was their mutual love for Mexican food that would eventually open the door For Karen to witness to Christy.
Karen mentioned that when Christy first learned that Karen was a believer, she’d never harassed her about it, but whenever Karen would mention anything about God or Jesus, Christy would either change the conversation or walk away. Karen said that she prayed often for God’s help in softening Christy’s heart, and Giving her the right opportunity to talk with Christy. Each time, the Holy Spirit would merely impress upon her to just continue to conduct herself in a kind manner. Each time there was a social function, and Christy and the others were ordering alcoholic beverages, Karen would either order water or iced tea. Whenever someone would attempt to bring Karen the latest juicy company gossip, she would just respond with “We just need to pray about this.” Anytime a coworker needed a word of encouragement, Karen would always be there to give it.
After about a year and a half of working together, Christy showed up at work and was unusually quiet, so Karen extended an invitation to her for them to do lunch at a nearby Mexican restaurant, and Christy accepted. During lunch, Karen was able to offer Christy some Godly wisdom regarding some personal issues which had arisen in Christy’s life. After this, Christy began to occasionally ask Karen questions about the Bible and Karen’s faith. Karen felt the Holy Spirit guiding her not to push Christy too hard, but to just continue to be a caring friend and coworker.
Karen did mention that sometimes when they pulled out of the parking lot to head for lunch, she’d casually mention to Christy, “One day a trumpet is going to sound, and Jesus will call all believers up to meet Him in the air. If that should occur right now, you do realize no one will be driving this car.” Christy would then just simply roll her eyes and change the subject.
Finally, about five months ago, on a Monday, as Karen and Christy pulled out of the company parking lot, Karen commented, “One day a trumpet is going to sound, and Jesus will call all believers up to meet Him in the air. If that should occur right now, you do realize no one will be driving this car.”, however this time Christy responded, “When it sounds I’ll be going to meet Him too.” Christy then went on to explain that she’d met several other Christians over the years who’d either came across as too preachy, or who would end up being hypocrites, however she’d always admired how Karen lived out her faith from the first time they’d met. Christy admitted that though her parents and the money she made could get her any material thing she desired, Karen had the one thing that she wanted the most…peace and the genuine respect of other people. Christy explained to Karen that the previous Saturday, she’d been flipping through the channels when she came across one of Billy Graham’s classic sermons. She listened, and when the altar call was made she prayed and received Jesus Christ into her heart.
Karen explained that since then Christy has found a good church home, and even though she is a babe in Christ, the change God has made in Christy’s life is very evident. Christy has even convinced her mother to attend a few church services with her, and prays daily that both of her parents will become believers before it is too late.
Karen and Christy’s story is a perfect example of the truth that: We never know who is watching our life, and how us living out our faith can positively impact the life of others. It is true that the greatest sermon we can ever preach is the life that we live.
As Karen told Christy, that trumpet will sound one day, and only those who have accepted God’s gift of salvation will meet the Lord in the air. God loves each person in this world; And there is an emptiness in our heart that only the Lord can fill. If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Savior, you can receive Him by praying, believing, and applying the prayer below:
PRAYER OF SALVATION:
Lord, I acknowledge that I have sinned against You. I now ask You to forgive me of my actions. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins, and rose again on the third day, so that I could have eternal life. I now invite Jesus to come into my heart, and guide my life from this day forward. I thank You, Jesus for saving me.
When we accept salvation, God saves us immediately, and makes us fit for entrance into Heaven, however some changes God will empower you to make easily, while making other changes will be a process that may take months or even years to make. Regardless of your situation, I assure you that the Lord loves you more than you could ever comprehend, and He will be with you every step of the way. Pray, study God’s Word and ask Him to give you revelation of what you are reading. I also pray that the Lord will direct you to a true Bible teaching, Jesus loving church, where you can have the support of other believers.
