I Pledge Allegiance To the Lord

Allegiance is defined as follows:

1. the loyalty of a citizen to his or her government or of a subject to his or her sovereign.
2. loyalty or devotion to some person, group, cause, or the like.

Many people pledge their allegiance to the republican Party, while others choose to pledge their allegiance to the Democratic Party. Over the past few football seasons, many have battled over their allegiance to the NFL players’ protest vs other people’s allegiance to saluting the US Flag.

While I am very grateful to live in a country where I can openly express my Christian beliefs, and exercise my right to vote for political candidates, who best represent the values that are important to me; The Holy Spirit has been impressing upon me, lately, the importance that we who profess salvation are careful not to allow our allegiances to the things of this world to take precedence over our allegiance to God, and seeking to do His will.

Romans 12:1-2:
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Matthew 7:21
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 22:35-40
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Our adversary, Satan, is very cunning and specializes in sowing seeds of division. All of the angels once lived in the splendors of Heaven and experienced God’s love firsthand, however Satan was able to persuade 1/3 of them to rebel against their Creator. If the Evil One can corrupt angels, who saw God face-to-face, it is a lesson for each of us, who are striving to see the Lord, to guard our hearts and minds from being distracted or corrupted.

The issue usually begins when an event occurs that stirs our emotions, and we find ourselves allowing our emotions to overrule Godly principles. For example:

An unarmed African American is killed by a white officer, and all of the evidence points to a sure conviction of the officer; yet the officer is eventually cleared of any wrong doing. While many African Americans will be justified in being outraged at this injustice, Satan will seize this as an opportunity to place within the hearts of many that all white officers are crooked.

An attack is launched within U.S. borders, by Middle Eastern terrorists. The Evil One uses this as an opportunity to promote the thought that we should fear or hate anyone from countries such as: Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan.

I know that I may step on some toes with this one, but as I mentioned earlier, many of us give our allegiance to either the Republican or Democratic Party to the extent that we are unwilling to consider voting across party lines to elect a candidate whose demeanor, values and skills may make them a better choice to be a local, state, or federal leader

The above examples are just a few hot topics that we’ve all been confronted with lately. It is important that each of us examine our life and seek God through prayer and the Bible. The Holy Spirit will convict us of the movements, false beliefs and idols that are hindering our proper allegiance to doing the will of God and being good ambassadors of Christ.

When our allegiance to God is not hindered, then we are able to operate under principles such as:

• God loves every person, but He does not love the sinful things we do.
• Jesus died and rose again to offer salvation to every person. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what a person looks like on the outside, it is the content of their character and willingness to apply God’s Word to their life that is important. Let me add here that no racist will enter Heaven.
• The majority of people of other religions want a peaceful life. They were raised in their beliefs from birth, or accepted another faith for other reasons. We should not hate these individuals, but instead allow our words and actions to testify to the power, love, and grace of the One true God operating in our life. The Holy Spirit will then do the convicting and converting to salvation of the lost. God will deal with, or enable the military and other law enforcement to deal with individuals with sinister agendas.
• We should honor and obey the laws of the land, unless these laws go against the Word of God.

John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Proverbs 22:2
The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all.

Galatians 5:19-26
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

James 1:27
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Galatians 3:26-28
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Heavenly Father, please help us to examine our life. Make us aware of the worldly allegiances that are taking precedence over our loyalty to doing Your will. Please forgive us for areas where we’ve fallen short, and help us to be wiser going forward. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
