19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
Listen to you more than God: There is no authority apart from God. When human authority rejects God’s authority, it becomes twisted and loses its right to demand (Acts 5:29) compliance. From the beginning, God’s people have resisted any command that was against God’s will. For example, the Jewish midwives of Exodus 1:16; Moses’ parents in Hebrews 11:23; Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego in Daniel 3.
Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
We ought to obey God: As to the accusation of disobedience to authority, peter put the charge in context. Jesus said, “YOU SHALL BE MY WITNESS” Acts 1:8. The council said, “You shall not be His witness” Acts 5:28.
All authority comes from God. In circumstances Where authority commands what God has forbidden, or forbids what God has commanded, You and I as Christians must obey the Author of all authority, God Himself. When we submit to governmental authority because the One who instituted authority is God Himself. When we submit to government, we are submitting to God.
Peter and John stood before the same men who presided over the trial of Jesus prior to His crucifixion. Keep in mind that Peter had previously denied knowing Christ in the courtyard outside where Jesus was being examined by the authorities. A resurrected Lord had now transformed a cowering Peter into a courageous pro-claimer of truth. He will do the same for you.
while Peter and John were on trial, filled with the Holy Spirit and the confidence of Christ, they fearlessly declared that the healing of a lame man happened by the name of Jesus (Acts 3:6, 8). Peter and John’s accusers warned them not to speak and teach in the name of Christ.
Peter and John were true and faithful witnesses; They couldn’t stop proclaiming what they had seen and heard.
FRIENDS, BEING THREATENED NOT TO SPEAK IN THE NAME OF JESUS STILL OCCURS TODAY IN 2017, BUT IF THE RESURRECTED SAVIOR LIVES IN YOU, YOU CANNOT STOP TALKING ABOUT HIM. LIVE EMBOLDENED BY YOUR LORD.
Heavenly Father, let people recognize that we are with Jesus. May we always speak about You.
