Quantity Over Quality

As we look around at our society the ideal of having a high quality of life is being defined by many people as: having a massive bank account, living in a lavish home with all of the furnishings, driving the latest vehicle, having a great physique, being able to take vacations to exotic locations, and being in social settings where we have an opportunity to “rub elbows” with likeminded individuals.

Yes, materialistic prosperity has become the definition of having a high quality of life for many, and this way of thinking has even crept into many of our churches; with more messages now being geared around the theme of people pursuing God’s favor, so that they can get material things, when people truly need to know that God’s favor is found by us desiring to turn away from our sinful ways and serve our Creator out of a genuine love and a pure heart. It must be conveyed to men and women that while there is nothing wrong with working hard and being able to afford nice things, the honest truth is that we were all born into sin(Psalm 51:5, Romans 3:23), and regardless of how many things we attain in life, unless we choose to make Jesus Christ the Lord of our life, we are destined to spend an eternity in Hell.

It is high time for all of us to put on the brakes, and instead of thinking about our quality of life, let’s take some time and truly consider the QUANTITY OF ETERNITY.

Let’s think about it like this, a person could be fortunate to live 100 years, but then there is eternity. One hundred years is very small compared to the endlessness of our eternal destination.

Let’s take a look at Job. Based upon his wealth, he would be considered a person with a high quality of life, however we learn that in the midst of not only losing his worldly possessions, but also his health, Job makes the following comment, which indicates that he was more concerned about the quantity of his eternity:

Job 19:25-27
25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

Because it was His mission to redeem mankind from the penalty of our sins(Hell), and offer mankind eternal life in Heaven; Jesus spoke quite a bit about the severity of each of us considering the eternal ramifications of our life choices.

For Example:
Matthew 6:19-21
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Matthew 16:26
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Another notable example, is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.(Luke 16:19-31) Here we see the contrast between a wealthy man, who enjoys a wonderful quality of life, only to wind up with a horrific quantity of eternity; while Lazarus is a beggar, suffered a low quality of life, but reaped the benefits of a peaceful and joyous quantity of eternity.

Satan is the Father of Lies. He operates in two ways:

1. He will offer a person all of the material things their heart desires, giving them a sense of self-sufficiency; and encouraging them to keep God out of the picture. Like the rich man, the person enjoys what they consider a high quality of life, but they end up facing the consequences in eternity.
2. He finds a person, who does not have a lot of material things or who is lonely. He then discourages them with thoughts that God is to blame for their misfortune. This in turn keeps a person from receiving Christ into their heart, and thereby facing a horrible quantity of eternity.

My heart aches for all of the people who choose to reject God’s gift of salvation. I often think of many of the celebrities and sports personalities, who make comments or conduct themselves in a manner that is contrary to the Word of God. These individuals are glorified by the world, and outwardly live a high quality of life, however unless they make a change they will face a horrific quantity of eternity. And then there are all of the people who suffer greatly in this life, and feel that God does not care or is nonexistent.

For the above two reasons, we who know the truth must be serious about witnessing to the lost. While we cannot force our faith on anyone, people must be told that: Rich or poor, regardless of whether they have a “wonderful quality of mortal life, or not; Jesus shed His blood and died on the cross, and rose from the grave, so that everyone who chooses to welcome Him into their heart can have a quantity of eternal life where God’s peace, joy, and love abides forever.

Romans 6:23 ]
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

This is why I want quantity over quality.

Heavenly Father, in a world where it can be very easy to become distracted by the temptation to place the pursuit of fame and fortune ahead of serving You, We ask that You would forgive us for past mistakes, and help us to focus on being intentional in laying up treasures in Your kingdom, so that we can enjoy the quantity of an eternity in Your presence.
