Principles Of Repentance

Luke 24:45-47 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. (46) Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, (47) and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

I. Repentance the action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse
Many understand the term repentance to mean turning from sin. This is not the biblical definition of repentance. In the Bible, the word repent means to change one’s mind. The Bible also tells us that true repentance will result in a change of action. (PLEASE READ Luke 3:8-14; Acts 3:19, and Romans 12:2)

II. PRINCIPLES OF REPENTANCE
A. Repentance is a GIFT from God.
Acts 11:17-18 If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?” (18) When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”
2d Timothy 2:24-26 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patent, (25) in humility correcting those who are on opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, (26) and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil having been taken captive by him to do his will.
B. Repentance is not a single ACT but an ongoing and CONTINUAL attitude.
C. Repentance is turning not merely from what you have DONE but from what you ARE.
Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.
1. We are born Sinners
2. But it is not until you repent of what you ARE that true repentance begins.
D. Repentance is not what you do for YOURSELF but what you do for GOD.
Repentance for self and true repentance for God.
E. Repentance Deals not merely with the FRUITS of Sin but with the very ROOTS of Sin.
If we only repent of the FRUITS OF SIN, the ROOTS will continue to produce the fruits over and over.
F. Repentance is not SECRET but PERSONAL.
The range of repentance must be as BROAD as the IMPACT of your sin.
G. Repentance is Both NEGATIVE and POSITIVE
Daniel 4:27 Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.

God insists that we both cease to do EVIL and learn to do GOOD.

Matthew 3:8
Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

Accept Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, today. Today is the day of salvation. Now is the accepted time. You truly may not have tomorrow. Salvation is a free gift. have a Blessed Day.
