Identifying The Enemy

As we look around at the world we live in, it is very easy to see that there is a battle that is being waged between the forces of Good and the forces of Evil. Pride, jealousy, arrogance, adultery, racism, murder, lawlessness, etc…, there is a mastermind behind it all.

Satan is not a cartoon character, he is a real spirit, and is the enemy of all that is Good. He does not show up as a horned man, in a red suit, but instead he studies each of us to determine our weaknesses, and shows up as the thing we desire the most that will prevent us from serving God.

So where did he come from, and why is he so intent on deceiving people? The Bible gives us plenty of info.

ORGIN OF EVIL:
At some point during the Creation, God created the angels, and bestowed to each of them the gift of free will. The Bible mentions only three angels by their names: Gabriel the Messenger Angel, Michael the Warrior Angel, and Lucifer, whom from what Ezekiel 28 tells us, was an angel of great beauty and was also a music worship leader. Lucifer became prideful and arrogant and sought to overthrow God:

Isaiah 14:12-14
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

So where did sin originate from? Right Here And, what was his sin? PRIDE

Revelation 12:7-9, reveals to us that Lucifer convinced 1/3 of the angels to join him in his hostile takeover attempt of Heaven. This should give us a glimpse of the cunning of the Evil One, for him to be able to sway other angels, who’d experienced the beauty of Heaven and the glory of God’s love, to now rebel. Michael and the remaining angels battled Lucifer’s forces, and cast them out of Heaven.

When God created man in his image, and gave Adam dominion over the earth, the Evil One saw an opportunity to spite God. Satan used the same thing that got him exiled from Heaven…PRIDE, to deceive Adam and Eve into believing that God was holding back knowledge from them, and got them to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. In doing this the sin nature was introduced into the heart of mankind and separation was created between God and mankind. Not willing to abandon mankind, God promised to send a redeemer who would defeat sin and redeem man from sin’s penalty…Hell. Of course this redeemer is Jesus Christ.

TACTICS OF THE EVIL ONE:

Basically, Satan and his fallen angels have been sentenced to an eternity in the lake of fire and brimstone, this punishment just has not been administered yet. His endgame is to discourage as many people as he can from accepting Jesus Christ, and thereby causing these people to share in the Evil One’s ultimate fate.

Satan is considered the Prince of this World, and has marshalled his demons into action, in an effort to tempt, deceive, and destroy mankind by preventing people from coming to know Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

At the top of his list of favorite tactics to use against people is PRIDE. Pride is at the root of every sin committed.

Galations 5:19-21
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Just as Lucifer allowed his arrogance to lead him down the road of attempting to seize control of Heaven, and demanding that all living things worship him, he offers fame and fortune to men and women. I’m sure all of us can think of people we know personally or celebrities who chase the temporary fame and adoration of this world. These people may attain great wealth and popularity, however because they do not have inner peace within their hearts many of them turn to alcohol, drugs, sexual immorality, and hateful behavior in their search for fulfillment. Sadly, they mock and ridicule the one person who desires to give them peace, and that’s Jesus Christ. Satan’s goal is to use these individuals to lure other people away from God, or to kill them as quickly as he can in order to separate them from God forever in Hell.

Mark 8:36
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

John 10:10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Some of Satan’s other main tactics are:

• Deceiving people into believing that they have plenty of time to get saved, and should enjoy the pleasures of life
• Deceiving people into believing that their sins are too great for God to forgive
• Deceiving people into believing that God does not exist
• Deceiving people into believing that he, the devil, does not exist
• Deceiving people into following false religions, in which, they are either worshipping themselves, material things, or evil spirits

FIGHTING BACK:
Yes, the Evil One is a formidable foe, however Jesus Christ has given every born again believer the power to resist temptation and overcome the schemes of the adversary. We do this by first, accepting Jesus as our personal Saviour. It is then important that we establish a strong daily prayer life by talking with God , and study the Word of God daily. As we feed our spirit, via the Word, we grow stronger and are better equipped to resist Satan’s lies.

I John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Ephesians 6:10-11;13-18
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

THE END OF EVIL:
Satan and his demonic forces have been the instigators of countless wars, the persecution and deaths of saints, broken marriages, and civil unrest, just to name a few things. A day will come when God will administer the final judgment to the Evil One and his followers. This judgment is found in Revelation 20:

Revelation 20:10-15
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Lucifer had a great position in Heaven, however his pride caused him to attempt to exalt himself, and instead he is constantly falling: from heaven to Earth, from Earth to the Pit, from the Pit to the lake of fire and brimstone. Sadly, as the passage above reveals, anyone who chooses to believe Satan’s lies and reject God’s gift of salvation, will suffer the same fate.

God loves each and everyone of us, however He will never force Himself upon us. II Peter 3:9, explains that the Lord is patient and does not want anyone to spend an eternity in the lake of fire and brimstone It is God’s will that each of us would accept Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour,, and live a victorious and abundant life that brings glory to the Lord…and when this mortal life is over, that we would live forever in His Heavenly Kingdom.

John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The home that Satan forfeited, can be ours. Place your trust in Jesus Christ today.
