Why Should I Attend Church?

Are you a member of Bedside Baptist or Saint Mattress, where Pastor Pillow and Deacon Sheets preside with somnolent gravity.

The New Testament repeatedly emphasizes the importance of local assemblies. It was the pattern of Paul’s ministry to establish local congregations in the cities where he preached the gospel. The passage below commands every believer to be a part of such a local body and reveals why this is necessary.

Hebrews 10:24-25
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

It is in the local body to which one is committed that there can be the level of intimacy that is required for carefully stimulating fellow believers to love and perform good deeds. It is in this setting that we can encourage one another.

The New Testament also teaches that every believer is to be under the protection and nurture of the leadership of the local church. These Godly men and women can shepard the believer by encouraging, admonishing, and teaching. Hebrews 13:7 and 17 helps us to understand that God has graciously granted accountability to us through godly leadership. Please read Hebrews 13:7 and 17.
When Paul gave Timothy special instructions about the public meetings,

I Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

I believe the emphasis in public worship includes three things:
1. Hearing the Word.
2. Being called to obedience.
3. Action through exhortation and teaching.

Acts 2:42 shows us what the early church did when they met together.

Acts 2:42
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Christians came together.

Brothers and Sisters, active local church membership is imperative to living a life without compromise. It is only through the ministry of the local church that a believer can receive the kind of teaching, accountability, and encouragement that is necessary for him/her to stand firm in his/her convictions. God has ordained that the church provide the kind of environment, where an uncompromising life can thrive.
