It is New Year’s Eve, the time when many of us reflect back over the past years success and failures. Many people do a self-inventory of their lives, and purpose to make changes in the coming year that will better improve their quality of living.
Some people may decide to lose weight. Some may decide to be more generous to the less fortunate. Others may evaluate the influence their circle of friends have over their life.
As Christians, it is very important that we do a self-inventory of ourselves, to ensure that we do not fall into a hypocritical state, but instead continue to allow the light of Christ to shine in everything that we say & do.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Ladies and Gents, we may not always like what we see when doing a self-inventory of ourselves, however before we can truly be honest with other people and ensure that we are ready to receive God’s blessings, we must first be honest with ourselves. God knows where we fall short, He is simply waiting for us to humbly repent, and ask Him to strengthen us, and help us overcome these areas of weakness. The lusts of the flesh and fruits of the spirit, outlined in Galations 5, are good passages to review when doing this self-assessment. The Book of Matthew is another good source, that will assist us in lining our attitude up with the nature of Christ.
It is true that God does not put more on us than we can bare, which not only applies to test and trials, but it also applies to Him not supplying certain blessings until He is certain that we are morally prepared to receive and be grateful for them. We also never know who is watching our life, and patterning themselves behind us. Many people do not read the Bible, nor do they attend church, therefore, the example that their born again Christian family members, friends, and coworkers set before them may very well determine whether that unsaved person comes to know Jesus as their Saviour or not.
We are about to move into a new year, and I’m sure all of us want to do all we can to minimize the areas
we fall short in, so that we can; overcome the temptations of the evil one, pass every test and trial, and receive all of the good things God has planned for us in 2016.
